Alien vegetation is a serious threat to South African biodiversity and water resources.
Of the estimated 9000 plants introduced to this country, 198 are currently classified as being invasive and this number is growing, and these plants are regarded as harmful to the natural resources of South Africa, they also out compete the indigenous species.
It is estimated that these plants cover about 10% of the country and the problem is growing at an exponential rate. If we do not clear invading alien plants in 10 to 20 years we will lose 30% of our run-off to rivers. In 20 to 40 years 74% will be lost.
